Cannes 2024: India’s 1st crowdfunded movie ‘Manthan’ gets special screening, Naseeruddin Shah, Prateik Babbar grace red carpet


‘Manthan’, India’s first ever crowdfunded movie, was screened at the 77th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. The 48-year-old classic, which also starred Smitha Patil, one of the greatest actresses of all time, was showcased in the Cannes Classic category.

Bollywood veteran actors such as Naseeruddin Shah and his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, Patil’s son Prateik Babbar, Dr Verghese Kurien’s daughter Nirmala and Amul MD Jayan Mehta graced the red carpet at Cannes on Sunday.

‘Manthan’ is the only Indian movie to be selected for the Cannes Classic section.
In an interview with the Times Of India, Shyam Benegal reminisced about the classic. Upon release, the movie gained widespread critical acclaim and bagged the 1977 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and National Film Award for Best Screenplay for Vijay Tendulkar. It also received an Academy Award/Oscar nomination in the category of ‘Best Foreign Language Film ‘ in 1976.
